Exceptional year for lambs

IgnacioMulin, a member of Central Lanera Uruguaya (CLU) talked about the performanceof heavy lambs and reflected that this has been an “exceptional” year in whatregards volumes and prices. “Wehave reached the final stage. We closedoperations at the average price of the shipments from July to November. Then weshipped at prices on the spot. In my opinion, 2009 has been an exceptional yearfor lambs. We will reach a volume of 200thousand sheep for slaughter, when the number of heavy lambs in the country isof 650,000. This figure is almost like lastyear’s, and we thought it was going to be hard to reach this volume this year”,said the expert.

A month of realizations
The presidentof INAC (National Meat Institute) confirmed that the meat demand will continue rising and that there are significant perspectives for sheep meat.
Upon hisreturn from the International Sheep Forum held in Brussels and from the AnugaFair in Germany, Dr. Alfredo Fratti talked about the perspectives of meat tradefor Uruguay. He especiallyremarked the actions that are being developed to build a Uruguayan meat brand,and in this respect, he referred to the imminent enforcement of the resolutionestablishing the mandatory nature of the identification of export meat boxeswith labels identifying the meat’s origin.

Brazil reduces cattleshipments to the EU; Argentina and Uruguay increase them
Brazilreduced cattle exports to the European Union by 26% between January and August2009, while Argentina and Uruguay increased their shipments to the Europeanmarket by 50 and 15%, respectively, according to data supplied by the EuropeanCommission (EC). AlthoughBrazil continues to be the first meat and bovine products supplier of the EUwith 91,970 tons or 32.3% of the total volume of imports, its sales to theEuropean market have shown a reduction with respect to the same period in 2008(126,667 tons).
